Buttercup But"ter*cup`, n. (Bot.) A plant of the genus {Ranunculus}, or crowfoot, particularly {Ranunculus bulbosus}, with bright yellow flowers; -- called also {butterflower}, {golden cup}, and {kingcup}. It is the {cuckoobud} of Shakespeare. [1913 Webster]
