[imp. & p. p. {Belaid}, {Belayed}; p. pr. & vb. n. {Belaying}.] [For senses 1 & 2, D. beleggen to cover, belay; akin to E. pref. be-, and lay to place: for sense 3, OE. beleggen, AS. belecgan.
